Overview of Scientific Research Activities at the Faculty of Commerce and Tourism
Strategic Orientation and Priorities
The Faculty of Commerce and Tourism regards scientific research as a strategic mission and a core pillar that complements its educational activities. The Faculty’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that the quality of education is closely linked to the research capacity of its academic staff. Engaging in the creation of new knowledge and applying research findings to practice are considered effective means of enhancing teaching quality.
Accordingly, each year, the Faculty proactively develops research plans, allocates resources, and fosters a supportive academic ecosystem to encourage lecturers to participate extensively in scientific and technological activities. The key priorities of this strategy include:
1. Development of Learning Resources
The Faculty places particular emphasis on the compilation and publication of up-to-date textbooks and reference materials that reflect current developments in relevant disciplines and maintain strong academic value. This ensures that students have access to advanced and effective sources of knowledge.
2. Implementation of Scientific Research Projects
Lecturers are encouraged and supported in conducting research projects at various levels, ranging from institutional and university levels to Ministry-level and higher-level projects. These studies focus on addressing pressing theoretical and practical issues in commerce and tourism within the evolving economic and social context.
3. Research Publications
The Faculty aims to increase both the quantity and quality of research published in reputable domestic and international academic journals. Research publication is regarded as an important indicator of the Faculty’s research capacity, scholarly expertise, and academic reputation.
4. Organization of and Participation in Academic Conferences
Lecturers are provided with opportunities to participate in and present their research findings at domestic and international academic conferences and forums. These activities facilitate scholarly exchange, expand research collaboration networks, and enable academic staff to engage with emerging research trends worldwide.
Key Achievements
The Faculty’s scientific research activities have demonstrated continuous and substantial development, reflected in the growth of both the quantity and quality of research outputs. A notable example is that, during the 2016–2020 period, 100% of the Faculty’s lecturers produced scientific research outputs and participated each year in supervising students in at least one research project. This reflects a dynamic and comprehensive academic environment.
1. Period 2016–2018
This period laid an important foundation for subsequent development. The Faculty completed three institutional-level research projects, four textbooks, four university-level research projects, and notably, one Ministry-level research project. These achievements provided a solid basis for further advances in research activities.
2. Period 2019–2023
Research activities were further strengthened, with 15 university-level research projects and two Ministry-level projects led by the Faculty of Commerce. These projects addressed contemporary issues such as digital transformation in logistics and cross-border e-commerce.
3. Tourism Research
Prior to the merger, the Faculty of Tourism also achieved notable research accomplishments through a range of institutional-level projects. Particularly significant were five projects on sustainable tourism and community-based tourism conducted during 2018–2020. These studies proposed tourism development models for various localities, contributing to livelihood creation for local communities and the preservation of indigenous cultural values.
Of particular significance was a Ministry-level research project conducted in 2021 on solutions for the recovery of Vietnam’s tourism industry following the COVID-19 pandemic, which provided timely and practical contributions to the broader recovery efforts of the sector.
Scientific Conference Activities
The Faculty of Commerce and Tourism organizes two Faculty-level scientific conferences annually, providing an academic forum for lecturers, researchers, and students to present and discuss preliminary research findings.
In 2019 and 2020, the Faculty further expanded these activities by successfully organizing one University-level scientific conference each year, focusing on contemporary topics such as “Digital Transformation in International Business” and “Restructuring Global Supply Chains.”
In addition, the active participation of Faculty members in national and international scientific conferences held in Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore has contributed to strengthening the Faculty’s academic presence within the regional research community.
International Publication Capacity
Since 2019, the Faculty has implemented a strategy to promote international research publications and has achieved encouraging results. The publication of research in reputable Scopus-indexed international journals, particularly Q1 and Q2 journals, not only demonstrates research quality but also enhances the Faculty’s academic reputation and international standing.
This growth is reflected in the following figures:
1. Period 2019–2023 – Faculty of Commerce
A total of 33 Scopus-indexed articles, including three Q1 articles, were published, focusing on areas such as green logistics and supply chain management.
2. Period 2021–2023 – Faculty of Tourism
A total of 24 international articles in Scopus-indexed journals, including one Q1 article, were published on topics such as smart tourism and Generation Z tourist behavior.
3. Second Half of 2024
The Faculty of Commerce and Tourism published 12 Scopus-indexed articles, including two Q1 articles and four Q2 articles, demonstrating a marked acceleration in international research output.
4. Projected for the First Quarter of 2025
The Faculty expected to produce six international articles and eight domestic articles, continuing its steady research development.
Key Research Groups
To foster a specialized, sustainable, and continuous research environment, the Faculty has established research groups focusing on strategic, contemporary, and highly interdisciplinary areas:
1. Smart and Sustainable Tourism Development
2. Logistics and Supply Chain Management in International Busines
